SATURDAY SNAPSHOT
For this week's Saturday Snapshot I'm posing right where Route 66 officially ends on the Santa Monica Pier. Historic Route 66 has been the backdrop for dozens of scenes in books and movies.
including the classic Grapes of Wrath. Mark shot that picture of me while we were waiting for a table at Bubba Gumps. We didn't mean to go to Bubba Gumps, we wanted to eat at the restaurant that used to be there. The Boathouse. It used to be the kind of place where you could get a burger or fish and chips and a nice cold beer. But it seems to have changed in tone over the years and the city of Santa Monica decided that beer drinking and loud music weren't quite in keeping with the kind of mega-tourist trade the beachside town wants to encourage. Bubbas is.
I've seen a few parts of Route 66, but never paid too much attention to the sites. I have been to the Santa Monica Pier though, it's such a fun place :) Thanks for sharing, Book Savvy Babe

DeleteI was there as a teenager and remember having some of the most delicious seafood sandwiches ever!
ReplyDeleteYum - there are still a couple of smaller, independent fish cafes on the pier too.

DeleteRoute 66! My husband and traveled part of it this summer--picked it up in Illinois just east of St. Louis and rode it out to Stroud, OK. Someday we'd like to make it to the end. Thanks for sharing this picture!

DeleteI've always wanted to hitch a vintage camper to the back of a truck and ride the length of Rt 66 ... it's such a dream, but wouldn't it be a ball ???
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like heaven! I'm looking forward to the movie version of Jack Kerouac's On the Road ... pretty sure they will be hitting route 66 in the film.

I think the pier has upped their route 66 attractiveness. They now have route 66 memorabilia for sale which they never had when I was a pier regular.
DeleteI didn't realize that Santa Monica Pier was the end of Rt 66. I visited the pier when I was a teenager and rollerbladed on the beach sidewalk - so much fun!
ReplyDeletei remember when everyone rollerbladed along the beach sidewalk. Boomboxed music blaring. People would skate down to Venice. There used to be a guy on rollerblades who sang and played guitar ala Jimi Hendrix. I'm not sure if he's still there or not.

ReplyDeleteI live in Florida now and plan on going to Key West so I can stand at the southernmost point in the U.S.
Going to Key West is on my bucket list. Now THAT is a gorgeous place.
DeleteI live near the beginning of Rt 66 but never saw the end of it, even though I have been to Santa Monica. That's too bad about The Boathouse being gone. Those are exactly the kind of places I prefer.
